Description

A new fantasy story for you guys!

Barbara waited at the little spa bar when she found it: an old purple beauty-contest brochure left on the counter. The front showed small photos of smiling young women, each wearing a sash and a big, bright smile.

She sat on the tall white stool, crossed her legs, and started to read. That is when something strange happened. One of the girls in the photos winked at her.

Barbara blinked. She looked again. Now all the girls in the photos were looking straight at her.

“You found us!” whispered the girl in the middle photo. “Every year, the brochure picks one new queen. But there is a test. The crown is hidden in the water, and the pool only shows it to a girl who comes in as a true guest, in her best clothes. No swimsuits allowed!”

Barbara laughed out loud. She wore her favorite outfit: the long white vest with big silver rings, her black top, shiny black leggings, and black patent shoes. It was much too nice for the pool.

But the girls in the photos were all smiling at her, waiting.

“Oh, why not?” she said.

She walked to the edge of the pool and slowly stepped down into the blue water, shoes and all. The water was warm. It climbed up her shiny leggings, and her long white vest floated out around her like a little cloud. She went in deeper, until the water reached her waist, then her shoulders. She laughed as the water splashed around the silver rings on her vest.

Then she lay back and floated, looking up at the wooden ceiling, her long dark hair spreading out in the water. Everything was quiet and calm. And there, in the light dancing on the water, she saw it: a shining crown of sunlight, resting on top of her reflection.

So that was the secret. The crown was never really hidden. It was waiting for someone brave enough to jump in.

When she climbed out, dripping from head to toe, she went back to her stool at the bar and opened the purple brochure again. Water ran from her hair onto the pages, and little drops sparkled on her leggings.

She turned to the photos. All the girls were still there, smiling. But now one more photo sat in the middle of the page: a girl with long, wet hair, a white vest, and a very happy smile.

It was her picture.
